Ban battery cages
Spare 55 million hens from a life behind bars
After a long 7-year review, the new Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry have finally been released. The Standards provide for a phase out of battery cages by 2036. This 14-year phase-out is a woeful response for hens. Right now 12 million hens are imprisoned in battery cages and the long phase out will mean that 55 million more individual hens will be confined to cages during this period. The delay is also entirely out of step with the public’s expectation of animal welfare - the majority of egg consumers no longer purchase caged eggs.
A hen in a battery cage lives a life of utter misery. A hell on earth. She can barely move, her claws wrapped around a wire cage, she will spend her entire life with no more space than an A4 piece of paper. And when she is no longer ‘productive’ she will be killed.
This is horrendous abuse on an unimaginable scale
We do not want to wait 14 years to see hens out of cages. Europe phased out battery cages in 2012 and New Zealand phased out cages this year, as did 10 US States. Why are Australian hens left to suffer till 2036?
Please sign our petition and demand an end to battery hens NOW.
We are calling on Minister for Primary Industries Mark Furner to bring the ban forward and to commit to a rapid phase-out of battery hens.
It's time to free hens in Queensland. Join us and fight for an end to this despicable, barbaric industry.
